Courses and Classes.

Phew it’s been a strange summer, nothing much happened, but everything happened! Not a great deal of arty things, my arty shenanigans were thwarted, I went over on my ankle while on holiday and so that put to the rest of my holiday-I don’t have much luck with holidays something tends to go wrong and as a result I HATE going ‘on holiday’, which REALLY annoys my lovely partner!
Anyway this left me limping and.. well for several days not being able to walk or drive at all. So it hasn’t been a very arty productive time, nonetheless art happens around me, there are shows coming up and work to make, but firstly I have workshops and courses that I am running coming up, these are:
Firstly for Swansea Council’s Lifelong Learning, but at Gower collage Llwn-y-bryn Campus. I am running  ‘printmaking for beginners or intermediate’ course, the course is starting next week on the Thursday night 6-8pm. For the next ten weeks with a week in between for half term. You can find more information on the council website. Please note the course is subject to change which is out with my control.
Also in a couple of weeks I have a Cyanotype weekend or Blueprint course coming up at Swansea Print Workshop, you can find more details about that here.

In other news, at the beginning of the summer, I did sort of do a few small postcard sized screen prints, I might do a few bigger ones, but today I have been on a drawing course at Swansea Museum to create more drawings for screenprints and collagraphs the course was run by Kelly Stewart. Results coming soon!

Cyanotype Workshop

I am pleased to announce I shall be running a Cyanotype workshop at the end of March in Swansea.

Cyanotypes or Blueprints are essentially a photographic process, one of the first invented actually, it was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, but it was Anna Atkins -known as the first woman photographer- who used it to document botanical specimens not long after that time. These days it’s used by photographers and printmakers alike to produce unique blueprints.

Here are a few of my own works using the process, these pieces are old works for me now, but I have been doing some new ones.. I’ve just not finished working on them yet! For more details on the workshop see below…

CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP WITH KARA SEAMAN AT SWANSEA PRINT WORKSHOP

Full / Keyholder members £65 | Ordinary members £80 | Non-member £95
Swansea Print Workshop, 19A Clarence Street, Swansea, SA1 3QR

This two day workshop will introduce the process of Cyanotype or Blueprints s it is often known, and the extraordinary range of source material that can be used. Textile artists may be interested to use it as a basis for further machine work/ appliqué and embroidery

The course will cover:

Mixing the chemicals to produce a light sensitive working solution.

Choosing and coating a range of suitable substrates /papers . The emulsion can also be painted onto fabric for development as a textile piece.

This very versatile process will allow you to develop imagery through a wide range of sources

Photographic imagery can be used if it is transferred to acetate/ transparency

Drawn / painted imagery on tracing paper or specialist drawing film

A wide range of ‘found’ objects can be used exploiting texture and shape with great subtlety,

Cut paper shapes can also be used.

Exposure and processing involves the control of a UV light source | washing out and drying

The first day will concentrate on exploring creative possibilities through a range of small experimental pieces. The second day will provide the opportunity to develop larger finished pieces.

Swansea Open

The Swansea Open returned last year, it’s always held at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea, it’s Swansea’s main gallery and has had a tradition of holding an Open Competition for many years, the gallery re-opened last year after being closed for several years for refurbishment. This year I submitted two works-the maximum allowed and they both got it! I was amazed actually, as I almost didn’t submit one of them!

My ‘Badger in the Garden’ and ‘Numbat Antics’ prints shall be on show, most works are for sale, the show opens on Saturday-Sir Peter Blake is opening the show…and his own of collages and illustrations is opening at the same time, so that’s really exciting!

It runs from the 8th to the 2nd of February  from this year… into next year!

Leftovers 8

Leftovers is an idea by Wingtip Press in Boise, Idaho, America.

it’s basically about what to do with all of those wee off cuts of paper as printmakers we all seem to collect these inadvertently, well in Boise, they decided to make a worldwide touring exhibition out of it and ask printmakers from all over the world to participate, Swansea Print workshop has had an association with Amy Nack from Wingtip Press for several years now, in fact when she was over in Wales several years ago and I had the chance to meet her and chat printmaking over coffee in the SPW kitchen!

but I have never actually exhibited as part of any of the shows, mainly because my work is too big and although I have plenty of wee bits of paper around the place, I just haven’t had anything small enough, until now.

I’ve been running a printing without a press course since the end of the summer and so have been experimenting myself making examples to show my students. some of my examples have been printed by using erasers which have been cut and then printed as a mini relief print-much like a lino or a woodcut and I have made several designs with some lovely rubbers i’ve found in W.H Smith. (No they are not sponsoring me, Unfortunately, but they do have nice rubbers), The print I have submitted for the  Leftovers was shown as part of my inktober work a couple of weeks ago, I’ve just re -thought about it and printed it differently for the exhibition, I shall put one in my etsy shop at the weekend also and there shall be several available to buy in Swansea Print Workshop for £25.00 only. Here it is: Blodeuwedd .

IMG_1158.jpg

As a member of SPW I was invited alongside others to exhibit as this show only, I haven’t submitted to a touring show of Leftovers 8, just to the SPW leg of the show, but maybe next year I will, especially as now I have some practice with making mini prints!

Saturday 4-6.30pm is the opening event.

The exhibition runs through the rest of November and all of December and is open on all ‘Open Access Days’. Tuesday, and Thursday, 10.3-5pm normally, closed over Xmas. See the SPW website for details.

I particularly likes these prints, the one on the right is from America I think and the two on the left are by my boss the fabulous Jackie Ford.

In the print workshop there shall also be cards for sale by me and many others, many other prints and some of my wee paper mache foxy sculptures too.

Inktober Week Three

I seem to be a day behind almost every day, but I guess at least I’m getting a few things done!  There is lots of testing and experimentation going on with me at the moment, especially with all of these tiny prints from erasers!

and I quite liked this wee composition of the print and the block or eraser from WH Smith (even though it was the first print and done very quickly so not the best)..but…you can even still see the writing of ‘WH Smith’, I didn’t bother to get it off! Also I think really.. it needs re-doing, re-cutting, i’m not 100% happy with it!

Most of these works are towards an exhibition soon in Brecon..if I can manage to register them~!

You can find further info about them on my facebook page.
