Art

Long time no post!

Well it feels like that anyway, I hope everyone is well and still in lockdown, I feel lucky that in Wales we are still in lockdown-well pretty much, as someone with underlying health condtions-one of which isn’t being treated due the the pandemic (NOT GOOD NHS!!) -leaves me more at risk, so that’s kinda scary. Instead i’ve pretty much been in most of the time, with a few wee cycles to get some air. I am making online films, teaching art and craft classes. I have lots of students 40 odd and counting, which is quite amazing really!

But I thought I would share a few things i’ve been doing as a teacher, as I certainly havn’t had time to make any art for myself, what with making, filming and editing films all the time! (Something I don’t actually know how to do)

From the top I have been making collages, colouring in pages, paper mache, marbeling and creating textures and filming and editing the whole lot.

This has all kept me very busy indeed absolutely no furlough for me I just haven’t been doing a huge amount for my own creativity. I have been reading loads of books so that’s good as I don’t generally have much time to read a great deal, but I fit it in now first thing seeing as I don’t have to rush off anywhere. Normally! I have also been waking up at 5am for months, so that helps, I am exhausted though. ..but well-read while being exhausted!

Covid Colouring

Roll up-Roll up! For a  sneak peek into my colouring-in designs, it’s taking me longer than I thought to do these designs, as I keep wanting to colour things in..normally with the black pen, if you look at my sketchbook work-which is most like these designs, I colour in with black pen often!! It’s difficult to just to get the drawings correct so they are good enough for some someone else to play with!

These designs themselves are quite surreal, I have a wee hyena in the corner, a flat fish (as you do) a fantastical bird, an apple, a cuppa, a wee house! I love the surreal aspect to my work, I might make a few that are particularly surreal…I have a weird brain I think, who else would think of hyenas and cupcakes? (and I have no idea why I did!) I think colouring-in is a good mindful exercise, especially if you feel you can’t draw, I draw for mindfulness, I’ve been doing it for years before mindfulness existed!

I want to do a dog and a cat and an other pet page too, they are my next designs.

I also ordered a few supplies, for collage, so I hope to do some ‘how-to’ ideas too in time.

When I have finished these designs, they shall be sent to work-@Swansea Council, for them to put out on their social media, into a pack of crafts being taken around residents in Swansea and also on my blog and website for folk to copy, download and print off…i’m not exactly sure how yet.

In other news I thought I would also add a few cool things I’ve seen recently on telly or heard on the radio.

I’ve been enjoying The Great Pottery Throwdown..being a part time beginner potter, also I really enjoyed Age of the image on BBC 4. Also on the Radio..Radio 4 I really enjoyed Forum Internum.

In other news.. the only good thing that happened this week was that Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage  was saved!! Hurrah for that! I can’t wait to go! If you’re an artist and you’ve not read his book Chroma, you should..and indeed all of this books, but especially that one!

All or Nothing

Sometimes everything happens at once, actually, this happens very often as an artist.. there is 0 work for months, then it’s all at the same time, not only it is Dinewfr, and some work in Margo’s Vintage, but it’s also the Swansea Print Workshop Christmas Exhibition, this is opening on Saturday with tea, coffee and cakes all day from 10.30-4.30 pm! …and then is open then until the 27th of November.

Included are some of our postcards and larger bird screenprints that were printed in the summer with workshops by Kelly Stewart. That big grey Heron is mine..I know it’s a screenprint not a collagraph..shock horror!

There are many, MANY prints, cards, christmas cards and other gifts.

Exhibiting with the National Trust!

n.t kara seaman

I am very pleased to be exhibiting with the National Trust this Christmas with some fabulous artists! The grounds of Dinefwr are amazing, spectacular vistas around every corner and deers and cattle a plenty! The grounds are just behind the beautiful multi-coloured town of Llandeilo, which has great antique shops, galleries and independent shops and eateries!

My deer print, The fox nest and a badger in the garden shall all be there to welcome you!

PPSSTT! this exhibition is open for Dinefwr’s Christmas Fair from 22-44th October and shall be open to the public thereafter, although there is , as stated an official opening on the 30th!

Courses and Classes.

Phew it’s been a strange summer, nothing much happened, but everything happened! Not a great deal of arty things, my arty shenanigans were thwarted, I went over on my ankle while on holiday and so that put to the rest of my holiday-I don’t have much luck with holidays something tends to go wrong and as a result I HATE going ‘on holiday’, which REALLY annoys my lovely partner!
Anyway this left me limping and.. well for several days not being able to walk or drive at all. So it hasn’t been a very arty productive time, nonetheless art happens around me, there are shows coming up and work to make, but firstly I have workshops and courses that I am running coming up, these are:
Firstly for Swansea Council’s Lifelong Learning, but at Gower collage Llwn-y-bryn Campus. I am running  ‘printmaking for beginners or intermediate’ course, the course is starting next week on the Thursday night 6-8pm. For the next ten weeks with a week in between for half term. You can find more information on the council website. Please note the course is subject to change which is out with my control.
Also in a couple of weeks I have a Cyanotype weekend or Blueprint course coming up at Swansea Print Workshop, you can find more details about that here.

In other news, at the beginning of the summer, I did sort of do a few small postcard sized screen prints, I might do a few bigger ones, but today I have been on a drawing course at Swansea Museum to create more drawings for screenprints and collagraphs the course was run by Kelly Stewart. Results coming soon!

Printopia: an Exhibition

Welcome to Printopia, opening on Thursday night at Volcano Theatre, Swansea High Street, Roll up, Roll up for an array of beautful original prints and artworks to tantalise your senses!

I have some work there too! Alongside many, many wonderful artist’s and collegues.

Opening Thursday 6-9pm and runs until the end of July.

Cyanotype Workshop

I am pleased to announce I shall be running a Cyanotype workshop at the end of March in Swansea.

Cyanotypes or Blueprints are essentially a photographic process, one of the first invented actually, it was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, but it was Anna Atkins -known as the first woman photographer- who used it to document botanical specimens not long after that time. These days it’s used by photographers and printmakers alike to produce unique blueprints.

Here are a few of my own works using the process, these pieces are old works for me now, but I have been doing some new ones.. I’ve just not finished working on them yet! For more details on the workshop see below…

Swansea Open

The Swansea Open returned last year, it’s always held at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea, it’s Swansea’s main gallery and has had a tradition of holding an Open Competition for many years, the gallery re-opened last year after being closed for several years for refurbishment. This year I submitted two works-the maximum allowed and they both got it! I was amazed actually, as I almost didn’t submit one of them!

My ‘Badger in the Garden’ and ‘Numbat Antics’ prints shall be on show, most works are for sale, the show opens on Saturday-Sir Peter Blake is opening the show…and his own of collages and illustrations is opening at the same time, so that’s really exciting!

It runs from the 8th to the 2nd of February  from this year… into next year!
